Our story
In 1981, Dr. Mark T. Barclay started a school with one simple conviction: every believer is called and gifted by God, and the local church needs those gifts working. Pastors needed people who could serve with excellence, and believers needed to find their place.
So SMTI was built for people with jobs, families, and a home church. Students meet one night a week, open their Bibles, and learn from Dr. Barclay. They live at home, keep their job, and stay planted in their local church.
What began in a few classrooms in Michigan became America’s #1 Helps School. Class after class walked across the stage in caps and gowns, and churches across the nation and around the world began hosting SMTI in their own buildings.
Forty-two commencements later, the mission is the same. Find your call, build your character, and serve Jesus with it the rest of your life.
